THE SINKING OF THE TUG 'BAHADA'
Shawn Murphy will be our guest at the November meeting of the WMA where he will relate the history and mystery of the tug Bahada. The Bahada and it's sister tug Wyadda were constructed in 1902 by Moran Brother's Shipyards in Seattle. They were sold after launching to Admiralty Tug and began working in 1903. The Bahada was later sold to Wilmington Transportation Co. for whom she was working when on 4/23/91923 she was struck by the S.S. Richmond, a tanker owned by Standard Oil Co. and sank with one crewman losing his life. The tug was raised on 5/9/1923, repaired and sold to the Gilkey Brothers Towing Co. in Anacortes, Washington. On 11/21/1926 while towing logs from Anacortes to Bellingham the Bahada disappeared during the night on the north side of Huckleberry and Saddlebag Islands, east of Guemes Island. Nine crewmen lost their lives and only one body was recovered. Shawn Murphy, great nephew of Mark E. Gilkey will provide a much more detailed history of the Bahada, Gilkey Brother's Towing Co. and the quest to solve the mystery of this tragedy. Please invite you friends, this promises to be a great program. The 2018 application for membership to the Whatcom Maritime Association is attached. Please consider joining, we need your support.
